Travelling through Covid times

Travelling through Covid times

Back in May, when the Covid-19 situation hit hard in Europe, I have written a reflection or a thorough journal on how travelling may be post-Covid.

Fast forward to October now, and the situation has not anywho changed. People started to travel abroad or locally during the summer and even now. There is no post-Covid travelling. There is COVID travelling in fact. Once the borders lifted their restriction and allowed visitors to travel, people took on this opportunity and travelling as much as they can so 2020 wouldn’t be cancelled.
Apart from travelling back home and spending some solid quality time with my family, I have also ventured out for a long weekend away to the south of Portugal. Specifically for a road trip around the Algarve region. I have written several posts sharing places and tips for you, so make sure to read them or bookmark them for your future travel plans! In this post, I would like to share with you some of my observations and tips on how to travel during Covid times.
Don’t travel if you don’t need to
Most importantly, don’t travel at all if you don’t need to or if you feel unwell. There is so much to do in your town or locally as well, so don’t be blind by the fact that you need to go abroad! There are a lot of things in your country that is worth exploring, and it is attracting many visitors every year.
Stay healthy
If you decide to venture out, staying healthy is obviously a priority! Stay healthy without spoiling the fun by simply keeping yourself hydrated all the time, having your own bottle of water, and listening to your body it is never bad to take your own medicines as well just in case.
Make sure to have plenty of masks with you, so you can change them as often as you can, try to not reuse them for so long and wear them properly, as many people don’t actually wear them in the correct way. In addition, have your supply of antibacterial gels and wipes too. It is about a habit, but it is now crucial to adapt quickly. I think by now, people should be extra careful with the things they touch. British Airways for example do give a gel and wipes for customers onboard to use for their own extra safety.
I tend to wipe my seats and the surrounding area in planes, just for extra safety, not that I wouldn’t trust the airline that they wouldn’t clean it.

Do a quick health check before the trip
Before the trip, you should be still extra careful with places you go to or people you meet. You definitely don’t want to get sick before your travel. So stay healthy and take extra care even before you go travelling! For safety reasons you can do Covid-19 tests as well so you can make sure you are negative before travelling. It is also worth doing it once you get home. In fact, some countries do require visitors to have tests done before or they can be selected to do the tests at the place.
Check news regularly
Because of this uncertain situation of work, economics and travelling, things change day by day. Make sure to keep yourself updated in terms of rules, paper working that you need, countries that you are allowed to travel to or quarantine rules. You don’t want to travel to a place that requires 2 weeks of quarantine, as it wouldn’t be pleasant staying 2 weeks locked in for your vacation. Therefore make sure that the country’s destination is fairly safe too and they are open for visitors from your country.
Be flexible
It is also a good idea to purchase your tickets or hotels that are flexible. This will allow you to cancel and get a refund back or change dates if needed. Just in case the country is going to a lockdown, or due to quarantine rules. Always be aware that whatever you book now, it can get easily cancelled closer to the date. So always have your insurance prepared or purchase flexible tickets. Moreover, it is always much more flexible on a road! So consider doing a road trip if you can!
